The story of HB&C begins in 1980 when a young Jerry Hancock took his first construction job after two years of construction trades training. This laborer position lasted only through that summer, but it sparked a passion for creating beautiful things out of wood with just his hands and some tools.

Fast forward to 2001. After being employed by several construction companies for many years it was time to strike out on his own. Hancock Carpentry was born. He began doing residential trim and finish carpentry for several construction companies in the Grand Rapids area. His oldest son, Brennen Hancock, became his right hand man. Although there have been many lean years, sometimes requiring second jobs, the drive to keep the dream alive did not waiver.

In the past 18 years some changes have taken place. The name Hancock Building and Contracting was adopted in 2007. Commercial work was pursued and became a large part of the services offered by HB&C, although our first love, residential work, has remained steady. Alex Hancock, Jerry’s youngest son joined the company in 2016 after receiving his BA in Business Administration and working for a retail fixture manufacturer as a Project Coordinator. He is now our Project Manager and Estimator. Brennen remains in the residential side of our business as a Field Supervisor. Dawn Hancock, Jerry’s wife (and Brennen and Alex’s mother), began working full time for HB&C in 2017 after retiring from being a Certified Real Estate Appraiser. Dawn is also half owner and Vice President of HB&C. Other key individuals include Jeff Knapp who helps provide specialty services in the field with his nearly 50 years of construction experience.
